Nathan MacQueen qualifies top in compound as Rome 2025 gets underway

by

Qualification was completed for all sighted archers at the first leg of the European Para Archery Cup in Rome today, with visually impaired qualification set to begin on Thursday at the Spinacito field.

In compound, Great Britain showed the dominance that led its squad to two medals in Paris, with Nathan MacQueen topping the men’s board with 697 and Jodie Grinham scoring 694 – 10 points clear of her teammate Jessica Stretton.

Guillaume Toucoullet dominated recurve men’s qualification, finishing with 664 – a full 37 points ahead of second seed Kwak Geonhwi of Korea. The 40-year-old French archer, runner up at the World Archery Para Championships in 2022, is very much looking like the favourite here in Rome.

India’s Pooja topped the recurve women’s field with a similarly dominant 571.

In W1, Isabel Fernandez Jimenez of Spain led the five-strong women’s field with 618, while Italy’s Paolo Tonon topped the men’s category with 646.

Para Archery Cup events feature team competition in pairs, both doubles and mixed team formats. After today’s results, India poles for recurve men’s and mixed events; Great Britain leads the compound men’s, women’s and mixed; and Italy tops recurve women’s as well as W1 men’s and mixed team.

Competition continues Wednesday with individual eliminations. Finals take place on Saturday and are being streamed on archery+.
