As expected, the NCAA on Thursday unanimously approved the proposal to expand March Madness to 76 teams beginning next year. Eight teams will be added to the current format, which has been in place since 2011.

According to the NCAA, this would give more teams a chance to make it to the annual tournament, claiming that it would make it extra competitive and more thrilling.

It, however, has received opposition from respected figures in college basketball, including Gonzaga’s Mark Few, Michigan State’s Tom Izzo, Connecticut’s Dan Hurley, and Arkansas’ John Calipari, to name a few.

Still, the NCAA pushed through with it, as reported by Front Office Sports’ Amanda Christovich.

“The NCAA voted today to ratify the new agreement, which includes a $50 million annual additional revenue windfall for the NCAA,” said Christovich on X.

She noted that the NCAA has been wanting to expand for the last few years, but the “conversations have gone a little bit slowly” because of issues regarding the media rights.
