The College Football Playoff system has come under heavy scrutiny across the college football coaching world. Some coaches are happy with the way it’s currently structured. Don’t put Nebraska Cornhuskers head coach Matt Rhule in that group, though.
If Rhule had his way, then the number of teams in the running for CFP play would expand by a whole lot. Rhule talked about it while making an appearance on Husker Online, The Sporting News reported.

“The more spots the better, man. Make that thing 40 and let’s go,” Rhule said while offering up a laugh. “I think, again, you’re talking about a league that we play nine conference games where some others play eight. So I think that puts you at an automatic disadvantage.
“So the more spots, the better. We’re playing in a really, really tough league,” Rhule said. “We’re playing really, really good teams. And you know what? If you play in this league you deserve a chance to get to the postseason and see what you can do.”
Matt Rhule’s comments on the CFP didn’t sit well with some college football insiders
Rhule was catching heat online for his comments, including a comment on X from On3’s Ari Wasserman. “I wrote about it extensively here after watching the full clip,” Wasserman wrote, speaking of his own On3 story. “Instead of soft comments about College Football Playoff reform, how about Matt Rhule — and others — just get better?”

Rhule enters his third season as Cornhuskers head coach with a 12-13 record in two seasons. He probably believes Nebraska should have been considered for CFP bowl placement last season. The Cornhuskers finished with a 7-6 overall record (3-6 in Big Ten Conference play), beating Boston College in the Pinstripe Bowl.
Earlier in the 2024 season, Nebraska found itself ranked No. 22 and No. 23, respectively, in The Associated Press’ Top 25 Poll. As the season wore on, though, the Cornhuskers faded out of Top 25 contention. Rhule is hopeful that Nebraska’s offense finds a second gear with Dylan Raiola at quarterback.
