New York Liberty Get Massive Injury Update During Training Camp

by

The New York Liberty are on a mission to defend their championship in 2025. However, as training camp gets underway, they’re already dealing with a few injury concerns.

According to Jackie Powell of the Next, former MVP Breanna Stewart and forward Nyara Sabally were limited during training camp.

“Stewie (Stewart) noted that she’ll be more involved in live practice next week, ramping up for the May 9 preseason game. Sabally did what Sandy Brondello referred to as a ‘pre-practice’. After playing in Turkey, NYL wants Sabally to recover,” Powell wrote on X.

Stewart underwent a minor procedure on her right meniscus in March after playing during the inaugural season with Unrivaled, the woman’s league she founded alongside co-founder Minnesota Lynx star Naphessa Collier.

She extended her contract with the Liberty in the offseason and has been a big part of the team’s success since arriving in New York in 2023.

The Liberty boast one of the best rosters in the league, and Stewart remains the team’s heart and soul.

The former UConn Husky is one of the best players in the league, averaging  20.4 points, 8.5 rebounds and 3.5 assists in 38 games last season.

Sabally, the sister of Phoenix Mercury star Satou Sabally, is returning from a stint playing overseas in Turkey. She emerged as a solid role player  for New York especially during its run to the WNBA Finals last season.

Getting both players back healthy ahead of their opening week matchup against the Las Vegas Aces will be crucial as the Liberty look to start their title defense on the right foot.
