The NFL made a concerted effort to crack down on player taunting in 2025. Taunting penalties and penalty yardage jumped to their highest level since 2021 as referees were quick to throw a flag when a player made a questionable gesture after a play. Make a possible gang-related gesture? That’s a flag. Pay homage to Hingle McCringleberry? That’s a flag. Look at another player too aggressively? Well, it wouldn’t be surprising at this point if that were also a flag.
If you happen to be among those who loved the league’s approach to taunting last season, you’re in luck because the NFL competition committee reportedly wants to keep it up in 2026, per Front Office Sports.
The NFL will continue to stress strict enforcement of its sportsmanship-related rules by its on-field officials this season.
That means the officials will be expected to keep a close eye on players violating the league’s rules prohibiting taunting opponents, illegal celebrations and fighting, at the behest of the NFL’s competition committee

Taunting penalties are considered a form of unsportsmanlike conduct, and result in a 15-yard penalty. They can also carry fines, with a first offense running a player nearly $12,000. A second offense increases that figure to nearly $18,000.
When the league first introduced the directive last August, NFL executive vice president of football operations Troy Vincent said violent gestures were up 133 percent around the league and sexual taunting was up 52 percent. He urged players to be “responsible adults” when celebrating big plays.
While league officials took the directive to heart, sometimes refs may have gone overboard when determining what constituted as a taunt. That may have been the case in the NFC championship game, when Seattle Seahawks defensive back Riq Woolen was penalized for taunting on a fourth-and-12 play. The penalty gave the Los Angeles Rams new life and the team immediately took advantage of it, scoring on the next play.

Thankfully for Woolen, it didn’t decide the game. The Seahawks narrowly defeated the Rams in the NFC championship, and then went on to win the Super Bowl.
Other teams … may not have been so lucky. A taunting penalty, especially one that’s undeserved, could keep a team’s chances at any point in a game.
After experiencing the new normal last season, here’s hoping players can find even more tasteful ways to celebrate in 2026. Or at least ones that don’t involve any groin pumps.
