North Carolina reportedly exploring ACC departure for move to new Power 4 conference

by

Conference realignment never sleeps. It is a constant in the world of college athletics, and even the heavyweights of the world are seeing shifts in their futures. The newest program to look into a new home comes from one Power 4 conference with their eyes on a jump to a new one.

It has been reported that the North Carolina Tar Heels are believed to be seeking a departure from the ACC, the conference they have long called home, with eyes on calling the SEC their new conference. The report believes that the Tar Heels could be front-runners in an ACC exodus alongside Clemson.

North Carolina can leave the ACC in 2030-31 for a lower cost of just $75 million per year. Right now, their fees of exit fees are north of $100 million per year from now until 2029.

The University of North Carolina, which was founded back in 1789, has been an original member of the ACC since it was founded in 1953.

One can speculate that the move could be detrimental for the Tar Heels’ football program as a jump to the SEC would be an instant elevation in competition and possibly a harder recruiting battle.

On the other hand, the SEC has blossomed into a college basketball powerhouse and, as one of the sport’s blue blood programs, an SEC schedule could provide massive dividends for the Tar Heels in wins, recruiting, and NCAA Tournament trips.
