Jon Jones is now interested in a superfight with former UFC heavyweight champion Francis Ngannou instead of a much-talked-about matchup against interim UFC titleholder Tom Aspinall.
Oh how the plot thickens.
On Friday, Ngannou’s head coach revealed that “Predator” is open to making peace with UFC and returning to the promotion’s heavyweight division. Ngannou, who is currently PFL’s super fights heavyweight champion, had an ugly exit from UFC back in 2023 to pursue a lucrative crossover into professional boxing (among other reasons). UFC CEO, Dana White, promised he’d never do business with Ngannou again, but with the former UFC heavyweight champion open to re-negotiating two years later maybe the relationship can be heeled.
Jones, who was expected to fight Ngannou before he left the promotion, has been ducking and dodging a contract to fight Aspinall for over six months. It’s the only fight that makes sense in the UFC’s heavyweight division as Jones has the undisputed belt and Aspinall holds the interim strap. Jones has teased retirement while Aspinall claims he has a date and location for his next fight. Nobody knows what’s going to happen next.
It’s been complete chaos to say the least, but things got even more complicated on Friday after Jones learned of Ngannou’s willingness to return to UFC. “Bones” seemed more than interested in finally squaring off with Ngannou inside of the Octagon instead of unifying his UFC title with Aspinall. Jones even threw shade at Aspinall suggesting he’s “all hype.”
I’m hearing Francis Ngannou is still interested… now we’re talking. That’s a real super fight. A clash of champions, not just hype. He held the UFC belt, I’ve defended mine for over a decade. Two kings from different roads. Not just one legend facing a mouth that’s hot right…

Two kings from different roads. Not just one legend facing a mouth that’s hot right now, but two real legacies colliding. That’s the kind of fight that actually adds something special to my story. At least from my point of view.”
