Notre Dame continues March Madness green nails tradition for 2025

Postseason traditions can be found across all sports. Perhaps the most famous one is the playoff beard associated with the Stanley Cup playoffs.

But the Notre Dame women’s basketball team has a tradition, too, and that involves the players and coaches painting their nails green for the NCAA Tournament. It’s a tradition that dates back to 1997, the year the Irish made their first Final Four. It began during that run and has been ongoing with the Irish ever since.

Images from the Irish’s Selection Sunday watch party indicate that they already had painted their nails for the tournament. And just in case anyone forgot about this tradition, the Irish released a short video on social media showing the nails getting painted. They’ll be on full display for the first-round game against Stephen F. Austin on Friday at Purcell Pavilion.

Here’s hoping those nails will stay green through the first weekend in April.
