Notre Dame football looks poised to land an elite defensive line group for the 2027 recruiting class. Some good news is on the horizon.
Notre Dame football has the chance to solidify an elite defensive line group in the 2027 recruiting class. Head coach Marcus Freeman, defensive line coach Charlie Partridge, and the Fighting Irish landed an important early commit a few weeks ago from top-100 EDGE Aidan O’Neil. There is plenty more good news expected on the horizon.

Of the remaining defensive line targets in the 2027 class, there might not be one more interesting than Oradell (NJ) Bergen Catholic defensive end Jackson Vaughn. The talented pass rusher was originally a member of the 2028 recruiting class before reclassifying to 2027. From the very beginning, Vaughn has been a top priority for the Irish staff, and that has only intensified since the reclassification.
Even more good news was delivered to Notre Dame this week when it was announced that Vaughn had set his commitment date for May 26. The New Jersey native will be selecting between the Fighting Irish, LSU, Miami, Auburn, and South Carolina. Notre Dame heads into that announcement as the assumed leader.

If Notre Dame is able to land a commitment from Vaughn, all eyes will turn to Pennsylvania native Abraham Sesay to solidify a dynamite trio at defensive end. The key to that elite defensive line group will be to close on some impact defensive tackles. The names to know include David Folorunsho, Marcus Fakatou, Brayden Parks, and Xavier Muhammad.
Jackson Vaughn’s recruiting background
Despite reclassifying recently into the 2027 recruiting class, Vaughn is considered to be a four-star player by each of the major recruiting platforms. On the 247 Sports Composite ranking, he currently ranks as the No. 204 overall player, the No. 22 EDGE, and the No. 5 player from the state of New Jersey for the class. That rating promises to increase heading into a big 2026 season.

Some of his top offers include the Fighting Irish, Georgia, Alabama, Ohio State, Oregon, Michigan, Florida, LSU, Ole Miss, Texas, Tennessee, Texas A&M, Miami, Florida State, USC, Auburn, South Carolina, Missouri, Nebraska, Washington, Louisville, Maryland, Kentucky, Vanderbilt, Colorado, Pitt, Virginia Tech, Virginia, West Virginia, SMU, NC State, Georgia Tech, UNC, UCF, Illinois, Boston College, Syracuse, Duke, Cal, Rutgers, and Purdue, among others.
As a sophomore in 2025, Vaughn put together a tremendous season. The 6-4, 225-pound pass rusher managed to collect 40 total tackles, 12 tackles for loss, and eight sacks. Vaughn also broke up three passes for one of the better defenses in all of high school football.
