Notre Dame misses out on Zavion Griffin-Haynes, who commits to North Carolina

Notre Dame has missed out on a top recruiting target.

The Fighting Irish had made an offer to edge rusher Zavion Griffin-Haynes in December, but Griffin-Haynes has committed to North Carolina, where he’ll play alongside his brother Jayden, who has also committed to the Tar Heels. Jayden is a linebacker.

Zavion had initially committed to North Carolina when Mack Brown was still the head coach. He reopened his recruiting after Brown was replaced by Bill Belichick, but has now reconfirmed that he’ll be playing in Chapel Hill.

“It is great to be committed to North Carolina and to be going to the same school as my brother,” Zavion told On3 Sports. “It came down to development, relationships and academics for me. I am planning to come in, work hard and play early.”

Griffin-Hayes is coming out of Rolesville, N.C., which is under two hours from campus. He’ll be playing close to home.

Notre Dame, meanwhile, will continue trying to secure other commitments at the edge position.
