Notre Dame women’s basketball got a commitment out of the transfer portal from former Wake Forest forward Malaya Cowles.
Cowles should be the first of many acquistions for Notre Dame coach Niele Ivey as Cowles is just the fifth scholarship player on the Notre Dame roster.

The Irish lost Sonia Citron, Maddy Westbeld, Liatu King and Liza Karlen (all out of eligibility) from the 28-6 team that bowed out in the Sweet 16 while Olivia Miles (TCU), Kate Koval (LSU), Emma Risch and Kylee Watson all chose to enter the transfer portal.
Notre Dame’s Sonia Citron is one of 16 invitees to Monday night’s WNBA Draft
The 6-foot-3 Cowles averaged 8.8 points and 5.1 rebounds in 28 games, 16 of which she started, this past season for the Demon Deacons (9-20). Those averages were both career-high totals. She averaged 24.3 minutes a game. Cowles had a pair of double doubles this past season.
In Notre Dame’s 100-74 win over Wake Forest on January 9, Cowles played nearly 25 minutes and scored 15 points to go with 10 rebounds.
Cowles will have two more seasons of eligibility remaining.
