NCAA Division II Championships, Night 5: Nova Southeastern, Drury Secure Team Titles as Four National Records Fall
After five days of racing at the NCAA Division II Championships in Indianapolis, the women’s title came down to the last race. Drury had a small lead entering the final day of competition and retook the lead with a 1-2-3 finish in the final individual event, the 200 breaststroke, but Nova Southeastern showed strong depth across all events during the session before finishing off the victory with a win in the 400 freestyle relay. Nova’s 475 points edged out Drury’s 463, followed by Colorado Mesa (376), Indy (346) and Lynn (233).
For the men, Drury finished 74 points ahead of the competition, paced by victories from Ivan Adamchuk (200 backstroke) and Davi Mourao (200 breaststroke). Drury scored 525 points, with Tampa taking second and McKendree (349), Grand Valley (291.5) and Indy (290) rounding out the top five.
The final session saw four NCAA Division II records go down: Tampa’s Jacob Hamlin capped off a dominant meet with his fourth win and third record in the 1650 free, and three records went down on the women’s side, from Lynn’s Luna Mertins in the 100 free, Colorado Mesa’s Agata Naskret in the 200 backstroke and Drury’s Jonette Laegreid in the 200 breaststroke.

Women’s 1650 Freestyle
Simon Fraser’s Tori Meklensek had her meet start in heartbreaking fashion, losing the national title in the 1000 free by just three hundredths, but she rebounded with a resounding win in the 500 free Friday evening. In the mile, Meklensek entered as the No. 2 seed behind Indy’s Andrea Gomez Espinosa, the swimmer who edged her for the top spot over 40 lengths. But this race was no contest after the halfway point, as Meklensek moved ahead of Gomez Espinosa and pulled away.
Meklensek ended up dropping more than nine seconds from her season best as she touched in 16:20.35. In the race behind her, Missouri-St. Louis’ Justine Beard moved into second place around the 1100-yard mark and held that position, knocking almost 10 seconds from her best time to touch in 16:34.77. Gomez Espinosa ended up third in 16:25.93.

Men’s 1650 Freestyle
Tampa’s Jacob Hamlin has won his fourth individual event of the competition and set his third national record as he obliterated his own mark in the 1650 free. Having already bagged wins in the 1000 free, 200 free and 500 free, with national marks over 20 and 40 laps, Hamlin had the lead by almost two seconds just 100 yards into this 66-length event. In November, Hamlin clipped the previous national record held by Fabio Dalu by a tenth, but as he pulled away here, he achieved a three-second drop, touching in 14:51.81.
Paul Demesy, the West Chester swimmer who placed fourth in the 1000 free, cut 10 seconds from his season best to take second in 15:04.21, and third went to McKendree’s Christian Davidson in 15:12.00

Women’s 100 Freestyle
Luna Mertins has broken her second national record of the competition. Two days after a victorious, record-setting effort in the 100 free, Mertins was dominant in the 100 free, going out a half-second quicker than anyone in the field and holding on to win in 48.07. That broke a six-year-old national record set by Queens’ Polina Lapshina in 2019. Mertins took nine hundredths off the previous top time.
Kristina Orban, a freshman from Nova Southeastern, came back one tick quicker than Mertins as she secured second place in 48.63. Third went to Henderson State’s Kiara Pozvai in 49.35.

Women’s 200 Backstroke
Colorado Mesa junior Agata Naskret set her first national record of the meet Thursday, lowering the 100 back mark on the leadoff leg of her team’s 400 medley relay. A day later, she knocked a hundredth off that time on the way to an individual title. And now, Naskret has swept the backstroke events with a dominant performance.
She entered the meet as defending national champion in the event and with a seed time (1:53.97) that was already under the national record. In Indianapolis, Naskret led wire-to-wire and a time of 1:53.25, more than a second quicker than the pre-season national record (and existing meet record) of 1:54.48 held by Queens’ Hannah Peiffer. Oklahoma Christian’s Tammy Greenwood took second in 1:55.56, with Indy’s Mia Krstevska third (1:56.19).

Women’s 200 Breaststroke
The first three events of the night put Nova Southeastern in front in the team competition, moving from a five-point deficit entering the session to 43-point edge entering the 200 back. That completely swung back in the 200 breast as Drury dominated, securing a 1-2-3-6 finish to bring the team competition back into serious question entering the final relay.
At the helm of the event was freshman Jonette Laegreid, who knocked off the NCAA D-II record she set in November with her victorious time of 2:08.59. Laegreid surpassed her own national best (2:08.86) as well as the meet record of 2:09.12 established by former Drury swimmer Bailee Nunn in 2017.
A pair of Drury seniors joined Laegreid in the top-three, with Mellie Wijk taking second in 2:11.64 and Claire Conover placing third in 2:12.66. Conover was also third in the 100-yard event while Wijk won the 200 fly Friday evening. Nova did get a fifth-place finish from Claire Gass (2:13.63) to minimize the damage, but Drury also had Gwen Bergum picking up sixth-place points (2:15.17).

Women’s 400 Freestyle Relay
The women’s team championship was in doubt entering the final relay, but Nova Southeastern entered as the top seed and favorite. They held that spot and secured the title as Maya Esparza came home in 49.18 to pass Colorado Mesa and secure first place by 18-hudredths. The team of Zsofia Kurdi, Emilia Ronningdal, Maria Goncalves and Esparza finished in 3:19.09 to edge out Mesa’s team of Agata Naskret, Elli Williams, Kendyll Wilkinson and Ada Qunell.
The win combined with Drury’s sixth-place finish meant Nova Southeastern outscored Drury by 14, enough to clinch the title by 12 points. Nova bookended the meet with relay wins, having started out with an 800 free relay win Tuesday evening.
Mesa finished in 3:19.27 while Lynn’s Luz Tapia Sahagun, Laura Dekoninck, Malaika Schneider and Luna Mertins placed third in 3:19.86, with Mertins recording a sizzling 48.39 split to help her team reach the top-three. Findlay took fourth in 3:20.97, with Emily Mears-Bentley coming home in 48.75.

Men’s 400 Freestyle Relay
Grand Valley completed a sweep of the sprint freestyle relays in unlikely fashion as Matthew Bosch, the winner of the 100 free earlier in the evening, split 41.90 on the anchor leg to bring his team from fourth place and more than a second behind to secure the win. The team of Evan Scotto Divetta, Aaron Dies, Carsyn Christoffel and Bosch clocked 2:52.58, beating Drury by just three hundredths, with McKendree a further three hundredths behind.
Scotto Divetta had Drury in first place after the opening leg, but Drury and McKendree took over on the middle legs before Bosch’s anchor-leg heroics. The Drury team of Yuri Cabral, Alvaro Zornoza Quiros, Alejandro Villarejo and Matteo Vissotto finished in 2:52.61, but this runnerup finish was more than enough to secure Drury’s first team title in more than a decade. McKendree’s third-place team included Volodymyr Gavrysh, Tyson Upton, Arthur Souza and Alireza Yavari.
Aside from Bosch’s 41.90 splits, the top split belonged to Jacob Hamlin of Tampa, who went 42.47 to conclude a week in which he won the 200, 500, 1000 and 1650 freestyle events. His Tampa team ended up fourth in 2:53.01.
