The fallout from the Caitlin Clark-Alyssa Thomas incident continues after the Phoenix Mercury star hit Clark in the throat, and several controversial calls were made during that game. This has frustrated many WNBA fans and analysts, especially with Thomas only receiving a slap on the wrist in the form of a one-game suspension and a $1,000 fine.
Even Fox Sports’ Colin Cowherdhas had enough of the WNBA’s response to the situation, as he called out the league’s incompetence and alleged that the league had been disrespecting its biggest star.
“The officiating is awful and way too physical. The NBA allows physicality in the Finals but they want to keep their players healthy for the regular season and the early rounds of the playoffs. Why hurt your content? WNBA regular season is officiated like UFC,” he said.
Cowherd noted that Caitlin Clark had been gaining a lot of popularity, with her games with the Indiana Fever getting double the ratings of a game featuring A’ja Wilson, considered the best player in the league right now.

“It’s either incompetence or intentional, both are embarrassing… This is a paranoid, weird, insular league,” he added.
He also questioned why, despite her clear popularity, Clark was not included in the 30th anniversary poster of the WNBA, which featured Paige Bueckers and Angel Reese.
Clark has been getting banged up by physical play over the last few games, leading to many questioning officials over the lack of calls on some of these hard hits. Indiana head coach Stephanie White even called officials out,saying that officiating had been “egregious.”

Author and USA Today analyst Christine Brennan, best known for writing the Caitlin Clark biography, “On Her Game: Caitlin Clark and the Revolution in Women’s Sports,” has also grown frustrated with the WNBA officiating regarding Clark. She took to X to tweet out what she thinks of the WNBA response.
“A one-game suspension and no mention of punishment for the officials is a very poor response to a significant WNBA problem,” she wrote.
Caitlin Clark ultimately left the game after being hit in the throat, though it was more because of her constant back issues rather than the incident with Thomas.
