Ohio State football hires offensive line coach

by

Ohio State football has officially announced the next offensive line coach for the Buckeyes and it looks like a home run hire. The offensive coordinator for the Virginia Tech Hokies the last three seasons will be a positional coach for OSU. Tyler Bowen has an extremely impressive résumé that doesn’t just include his latest coordinator position at Virginia Tech, but also stops in the NFL with the Jacksonville Jaguars as their tight end coach in 2021 under former Ohio State legend, Urban Meyer. Before that, the former Maryland offensive lineman held a three-year stint from 2018 through 2020 with the Penn State Nittany Lions that included time as a co-offensive coordinator.

In addition to being the offensive line coach for Ohio State, Bowen will also be the run game coordinator, which makes sense considering that was the most consistent aspect of the Hokie offense last season. He has also received a ton of praise for his work on the recruiting trail and has been credited with the commitment of first-round offensive tackle Olu Fashanu and All-American tight end Tyler Warren, among others.

His additional experience coaching in the Big Ten includes at his alma mater with the Maryland Terrapins, where he was the offensive line coach in 2017. He also has offensive coordinator experience from his time at Fordham from 2015 through 2016. A body of work of this caliber at only 35 years old is a blessing for the Buckeyes and this experience will be vital to helping break in the likely new offensive coordinator, Brian Hartline, who is likely to be promoted from his positional duties at receiver after the departure of Chip Kelly to the Las Vegas Raiders of the NFL.

No one earned more respect throughout the OSU playoff run than offensive line coach, Justine Frye, but he is off to bigger and better things in the NFL with the Arizona Cardinals, and Bowen looks to be a worthy replacement. Frye was on the hot seat for a good portion of this season according to many and a big reason was his inability to recruit (which I disagree with), but Bowen is a known recruiter, so maybe that aspect gets a bit of an upgrade.

A few people maybe wondering why an offensive coordinator for an ACC school would leave for a lower title, but Virginia Tech fans weren’t exactly stoked for the results they were seeing on the field offensively and after feeling his seat get a bit warm, Bowen may have elected to press the eject button and take less responsibility.
