Ohio State football won the College Football Playoff national championship.
Many didn’t have much hope for the Buckeyes after their regular season-ending loss to the Michigan Wolverines. The Buckeyes were almost a three-score home favorite and lost to their rival, a clearly inferior side.
That lit a spark under the Buckeyes, and Ryan Day helped will Ohio State to a national championship in which it went through elite sides like Oregon and Texas. Tennessee and Notre Dame were the two others that lost to the Buckeyes en route to yet another Ohio State championship.
One thing that the Buckeyes changed up this season was who called plays. Chip Kelly, who left for the NFL after aiding Ohio State’s national championship run, called the shots after being named the Buckeyes offensive coordinator.
He, instead of Day, ran most of the offense, a change from the season prior. Day, who joined Joel Klatt on the Joel Klatt Show, spoke on that, and he delivered a perfect answer, basically noting the difference in not calling plays and how it might have helped result in a national championship victory for his Buckeyes.
Day’s response was perfect because it showed a lack of selfishness, suggesting he was happy to take more of a CEO role on the team, overseeing the direction of both the offense and defense but having more of a hands-off approach in calling the direct shots.
It will be interesting to see how Day chooses to operate now with Kelly gone and Brian Hartline, who was the main receivers coach and recruiter, as the offensive coordinator. All those logistics will still be hammered out in time.
There’s no doubt about one thing though: Ryan Day will do what it takes to bring a championship to Columbus. With an extension in hand, the future is bright for the Buckeyes.
