The first year of the College Football Playoff was in 2014, and in the last dozen years, the Ohio State Buckeyes have had one of their best runs in the history of their program.
The Buckeyes have actually been the best team in America over that time frame. No other team has been ranked in the CFP rankings more (72 times), and no other team has earned a spot in the CFP Top-10 more (69 times).

The closest team to them is the Alabama Crimson Tide, who are tied with Ohio State with 72 appearances in the CFP Rankings and 66 times they have been in the Top-10.
Ohio State’s dominance in this era has been truly incredible. It has spanned over two coaching staffs, 10 different starting quarterbacks, and 12 different iterations of the roster.
Since 2014, Ohio State has a record of 141-19.
The Buckeyes are 141-19 over the last 12 seasons. That’s an absurd stat to type, just as it is to read.
That’s an average of 11.75 wins per season and 1.5 losses per year. The only time that they didn’t win over 11 games was the COVID-shortened year, where they went 7-1 on the season.

In that stretch, the Buckeyes are 2-1 in National Championship games and have a record of 7-2 in College Football Playoff games, and in the years they missed the CFP, they are 4-4 in the various bowl games that they have competed in.
It’s safe to say that the Buckeyes have dominated this era of College Football. They adapted to the change in the playoff structure from the four-team playoff to the 12-team playoff.

Now, they are on the cusp of yet another evolution as the NIL and Transfer Portal era are focing teams to take a different approach to roster building.
The Indiana Hoosiers seem to be the first team to successfully adjust their approach and their roster to the new rules in College Football. The Buckeyes are following suit as they ditched a lot of their young talent and acquired more veteran players who are older and have seen more football.
This new era of college football is going to be very challenging to navigate, but just as they did in the past, you can bet on them to find the answers and consistently stay at the top of the sport year after year.
