Oklahoma cracks Joel Klatt’s Top 10 after Michigan win

by

College football analyst Joel Klatt thinks highly of the Oklahoma football team. The Sooners climbed to No. 13 in the Associated Press Poll and No. 16 in the US LBM Coaches Poll, both released on Sunday. Before either came out, Klatt went ahead and did one better, ranking Oklahoma No. 10 in his own personal top 10.

Oklahoma’s 24-13 win over Michigan knocked the Wolverines down nine spots in the coaches poll while lifting itself eight places. The Sooners limited Michigan to 288 yards in the win. 140 yards came on three plays. Quarterback John Mateer outgained Michigan all on his own, throwing for 270 yards and running for another 74. Under his command, OU ranks 39th in FBS in total offense. Last year, the Sooners ranked 119th.

“You saw what he can do,” Sooners coach Brent Venables said. “He falls forward a lot. He’s got great strength and great skill. He’s a tough guy. He attacks everything without fear. He plays within the system.”

OU has been even better on the other side of the ball, ranking 18th in total defense. The Sooners’ Week 3 opponent, Temple, ranks the same on the offensive side of the ball. The Owls have beaten UMass and Howard by a combined 80 in their first two games. Still, Oklahoma opened the week as a 24 1/2-point favorite

With Auburn in Norman for Week 4 and a game against Kent State in Week 6, Oklahoma has plenty of opportunity to climb in Klatt’s rankings and the official ones between now and the Red River Rivalry game Oct. 11.
