It has been nearly four years since Lincoln Riley made national headlines when he left Oklahoma to be the head football coach at USC. Even now, there is still plenty of animosity toward Riley in Norman, Oklahoma. In a press conference earlier this week, current Sooner head coach Brent Venables took an unprovoked shot at Riley when discussing his team culture.
“[When I first got here,] we had a 2.2 team GPA, guys not going to class, failing drug tests, no motivation, broken spirits,” Venables said. “We had to change the mindset and how we thought.”

Naturally, the quote drew a strong reaction from USC fans on social media. One account, USC Analytics, pointed out a tweet from the official Oklahoma football account ten days prior to Riley’s departure highlighting the team’s academic achievements.
At the end of the day, Venables has plenty of issues of his own to worry about. While Riley’s tenure at USC has been a bit underwhelming thus far, Venables’s stint at Oklahoma has been even worse. Coming off of his second losing season in three years, Venables would be wise to worry about his own program, rather than what happened with Riley four years ago.
