Oklahoma football‘s Reggie Powers III was ejected from Saturday, Nov. 22’s game against Missouri for targeting.

Powers appeared to lead with the crown of his helmet on a hit on Tigers‘ wide receiver Kevin Coleman Jr. on an attempted pass from quarterback Beau Pribula that was tipped with 2:34 left in the fourth quarter and the Sooners leading 17-6.

Officials reviewed the play and upheld the call on the field, sending Powers to an automatic ejection. Due to when the penalty occurred, it will also result in a suspension for Powers for the first half of Oklahoma’s next game, which will be against LSU next weekend.

The penalty came on a third-and-5 and would have forced a fourth down if not for the penalty. However, Jacobe Johnson picked up his teammate with an interception on the very next play.

For the Sooners, losing Powers in the first half against LSU could prove crucial, as they are fighting for a spot in the 12-team College Football Playoff. In the latest CFP committee rankings, Oklahoma was ranked No. 8 following a Week 12 win over Alabama.

If the Sooners can win out, they’ll be in a spot to reach the CFP, despite not playing in the SEC Championship Game.

Powers, a sophomore, has 23 total tackles this season to go along with one forced fumble, one sack and one pass deflection, entering the game Saturday. He added five tackles today vs. Missouri. He had four tackles against the Crimson Tide last week.
