OXFORD — Kevin Smith is the latest Ole Miss football assistant to commit to following coach Lane Kiffin to LSU.

The Tigers are expected to hire Smith, according to a Dec. 21 report from On3. It comes the day after Ole Miss (12-1) advanced to the Jan. 1 Sugar Bowl (7 p.m. CT, ESPN) by beating Tulane (11-3) in the first round of the College Football Playoff. Ole Miss won 41-10 under former defensive coordinator Pete Golding, who was promoted to head coach after Lane departed.

Smith was shown entering the team facility in a social media video posted by LSU football on Dec. 21.

Smith is not alone in making the jump to LSU. Offensive coordinator Charlie Weis Jr., who coached Ole Miss on Dec. 20, will follow Kiffin.

Former tight ends coach Joe Cox, wide receivers coach George McDonald, assistant quarterbacks coach Dane Stevens and slot receivers coach Sawyer Jordan are also headed to LSU, per reports.

Smith is a nice addition for Kiffin’s staff. He is in his fifth year at Ole Miss and has coached running backs such as current Rebels star Kewan Lacy and Cleveland Browns rookie Quinshon Judkins.

Smith was previously at Miami in 2022. He was also with Kiffin at FAU. Smith was a star player in his own right at UCF. He set an FBS single-season record with 450 carries and 13 games of more than 100 yards in 2007.
