The NHL announced on Wednesday that Ottawa Senators forward Josh Norris has been fined $2,000 for diving/embellishment. Norris got the fine in the same game he starred in, scoring twice in a 2-1 win over the Detroit Red Wings last week.
Norris received his second diving citation of the season in that game, and once you’ve had your warning, that’s when the league starts crushing players with fines. Norris, who makes almost $8 million a season, will now have to scrape together $2000 to pay the NHL piper.
The incident occurred at 13:07 of the third period when Red Wings forward Marco Kasper was assessed a minor penalty for holding. League officials felt like Norris helped the call along a little too much.
According to the NHL, it falls under Rule 64, which is designed to bring attention to and more seriously penalize players (and teams) who repeatedly dive and embellish in an attempt to draw penalties.
Fines are assessed to players and head coaches on a graduated scale. It should be noted that if Norris does this an 8th time, he’ll get a $5000 fine. Oh, dear.
