Penn State climbed up one spot and sits at No. 2 in this week’s US LBM Coaches Poll. The Nittany Lions opened their season with a dominant 46-11 win over Nevada last Saturday.
The Nittany Lions are ranked only behind Ohio State, which earned a signature win against previously No. 1 Texas last weekend. The rivals will meet in Columbus on Nov. 1 in a game that is expected to have massive Big Ten Championship and College Football Playoff implications.

Barring any upsets, it’s unlikely Penn State will overtake the Buckeyes for the top spot prior to that Nov. 1 game, as their win over Texas should go a long way with voters. Penn State did prevent Ohio State from being a unanimous No. 1, however. The Nittany Lions received 6 first-place votes and Georgia and LSU each picked up one first-place vote. Ohio State claimed 59 first-place votes.
Other ranked Big Ten teams include No. 5 Oregon, No. 12 Illinois, No. 13 Michigan and No. 21 Indiana. Additionally, USC, Iowa, Nebraska and Washington all received votes. Penn State will play Oregon, Indiana, Iowa and Nebraska later this season, giving it potentially four ranked matchups depending on how things shake out.
This weekend, Penn State will continue its non-conference schedule against Florida International. The Panthers received one vote in this week’s poll following a 42-9 win against FCS Bethune-Cookman. Nonetheless, the Nittany Lions are heavy favorites at home, with kickoff set for noon ET.
