In the end, it probably wasn’t the best idea for Fabian Edwards to wrestle Costello van Steenis.
In the PFL Madrid main event Friday, van Steenis defended his middleweight title for the first time when he put Edwards out cold with short elbows. The elbows came during Edwards final – and fatal – takedown attempt in their rematch at Palacio Vistalegre in Spain.

Van Steenis (18-3) put away Edwards (13-4) at the 1:48 mark of the third round, but he wasn’t having much trouble in the two rounds prior to that. Although many expected him to take the fight to the canvas, van Steenis kept things standing, including the vicious elbows that led to the retention of his title.
