
The Texas Tech football team’s 2026 recruiting class has commitments from eight players, but the first from an offensive lineman came Tuesday.
Jerald “J.J.” Mays from Pflugerville Weiss pledged to the Red Raiders. His high-school team listed him at 6-foot-4 and 285 pounds this past season when he was named offensive lineman of the year in District 12-5A Division I. The Wolves finished 8-3.

According to the Austin American-Statesman, Mays said at the Elite 11 Regional in March he’s focusing on playing center next season.
On3.com reported Mays chose the Red Raiders over SMU, Ole Miss and Oregon. According to recruiting services, Mays has attracted scholarship offers from more than 20 programs, including Miami (Fla.), Michigan State, Nebraska and Southern Cal. He also has offers from Big 12 programs Arizona, Arizona State, Baylor and Houston.

Mays is ranked as the No. 102 prospect in Texas on the 247Sports composite index. Rivals rates him the No. 67 prospect in Texas, On3 as the No. 85 recruit in the state. Mays is from the same high school as Tech safety Peyton Morgan and his brother, Red Raiders wide receiver Price Morgan.

The Red Raiders‘ other commitments are from Georgetown East View linebacker Tieson Ejiawoko (6-3, 226), Mount Pleasant defensive tackle Ayden Johnson (6-1, 315), New Braunfels Canyon defensive back Luke Bell (6-0, 175), Amarillo Tascosa defensive tackle Krush Johnson (6-4, 275), Pflugerville Hendrickson defensive back Maddox Quiller (6-1, 195), Bixby, Oklahoma linebacker Cord Nolan (6-0, 203) and Terrell cornerback Noah Lewis.
