PGA of America tabs former president as its next CEO

One golf CEO search is over.

The PGA of America announced Friday afternoon that one of its past presidents, Derek Sprague, has been named its next CEO, replacing the departed Seth Waugh.

Sprague, who served as PGA president from 2014-16, has spent the last seven years as general manager of TPC Sawgrass in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida. Previously, he was the managing director at Liberty National in Jersey City, New Jersey, for two years, and prior to that, he worked 27 years at Malone Golf Club in Malone, New York, where he served as general manager and director of golf.

While PGA president, Sprague had his fingerprints on PGA Junior League and Drive, Chip and Putt, and he also co-chaired the U.S. Ryder Cup Task Force.

Waugh announced in June that he was stepping down from the lead role that he’d held since September 2018. Kerry Haigh, the PGA’s chief championships officer, had been serving as interim CEO.

Other lead jobs in golf remain open, including the recently announced PGA Tour CEO position, LIV Golf CEO and LPGA commissioner.
