Podcast: Orioles pack excitement, disappointment into one week

by

This time a week ago, all anyone could really do was dread the idea of the Orioles playing more games against the Yankees. After every game of the previous four-game set went embarrassingly badly for the O’s, another Yankees series could have been the thing that spins this season out of control.

In this week’s episode, I’m thinking about how they got our hopes up a little bit by being competitive and winning two out of three against those Yankees. This included breaking the 2026 lefty starter curse, where they had been winless until beating the two Yankees lefties they faced. Would this be the start of the turnaround? It could have been, except then it wasn’t, as the Orioles went on to some disappointing offense against a bad Nationals pitching staff, losing two of three games to their neighbors to the south.

Also this week, I’m sad about Jordan Westburg, and wondering about his future with the team. I can’t help but think about how Mike Elias just abruptly gave up on Grayson Rodriguez this past offseason. So far, that looks like it was the right call, as Rodriguez only pitched for the first time yesterday and his outing went quite badly. The Orioles are really feeling his absence as their third base situation is going poorly with both hitting and fielding.
