Red-Hot Luca Urlando Adds Pool Record in 200 Back as Georgia Tops Emory

A week removed from his 200 butterfly NCAA record, Luca Urlando downed a Ryan Murphy pool record in the 200 backstroke Saturday in a dual meet with Emory.

The Bulldogs pulled out a pair of wins on Senior Day at Bauerle Pool at Gabrielsen Natatorium, the men winning by a score of 198-80 and the women prevailing, 191-102.

Urlando gave himself a backstroke day, as he does hold the American SCY record in the 100 back. Urlando went 1:38.18 in the 200 back, which downed a pool record set in the fall of 2015 by his fellow Tokyo Olympian Murphy. Urlando had a go at the 50 freestyle, winning in 19.34 seconds. He wrapped up the day by winning the 200 individual medley in 1:42.20.

Urlando had led off the winning 200 medley relay in 20.55 seconds, joining Kristian Pitshugin, Wesley Ng and Reese Branzell to go 1:23.55 and win.

Pitshugin won the 100 breast. Tane Bidois, the runner-up to Urlando in the 50 free, won the 100 free in 44.07. He joined 500 free winner Tomas Koski, Roman Valdez and Aaron Seymour in winning the 200 free relay. Seymour was second to Sam Powe in the 100 back, while Valdez won the 200 fly.

Matthew Bray won 1-meter diving with a score of 376.75 points. Renato Calderaro got the better of his teammate on 3-meter by 1.37 points, tallying 408.90. Jake Magahey (1,000 free), Arie Voloschin (200 breast), and Peter Sacca (100 fly) all added wins.

Helena Jones led the Georgia women with a pair of wins. She went 1:45.80 win the 200 free, then 48.89 to take the 100 free. Second in the latter was Katie Belle Sikes, whose 22.28 won the 50 free. Jones split 21.94 off the end of the 200 medley relay, leading Eboni McCarty, Charlotte Headland and Sikes to the win in 1:39.02. Julianna Stephens subbed for Headland to comprise the 200 free relay that won in 1:29.13.

Olivia Dellatorre pulled off a butterfly sweep, going 2:00.84 in the 200 and 53.53 to win the 100. Ieva Maluka did the same in breaststroke, her time of 2:11.67 dominating the 200 by 5.5 seconds after she went 1:01.34 in the 100. Marie Landreneau was second in the 200 free before winning the 200 IM. Elle Noecker claimed the 200 back, and Dune Coetzee captured the 500 free.

Michelle Cummo scored 299.10 to win 3-meter, then was second to teammate Ivy Buckley’s 288.45 on the lower board.

Megan Jungers won the 100 back in 54.83 for Emory.
