Former head coach Ron Rivera interviewed for a role on the Jacksonville Jaguars coaching staff over the weekend, according to John Shipley of Jaguars on Sports Illustrated.
Shipley adds that the specifics of what Rivera’s role might be are unknown at this time.
However, one can presume that with Liam Coen being a first-time head coach, Anthony Campanile being a first-time defensive coordinator, and the Jaguars’ offensive coordinator candidates all having never held that title at the NFL level, that Rivera would work in a senior assistant role, as Shipley put it, providing some experience to the coaching staff.
Rivera was not on an NFL coaching staff in 2024 but was the Washington Commanders head coach from 2020-2023. Before that, he was the Carolina Panthers head coach from 2011-2019.
Rivera’s coaching background before becoming a head coach was on the defensive side of the ball, where he was the Chicago defensive coordinator from 2004-2006 and the Chargers defensive coordinator from 2008-2010.
As a head coach, Rivera has a cumulative record of 102-103-2 over 13 seasons. This includes five playoff appearances, along with a trip to the Super Bowl in 2015 after the Panthers put together a 15-1 record that year.
“As head coach of the Jacksonville Jaguars, I will hire a first-class coaching staff, establish a distinctive and effective brand of football on both sides of the ball, and our players will live for the black and teal,” said Coen in his first statement after becoming the Jaguars’ head coach.
