Report: Texas football defensive tackle Sydir Mitchell expected to stay with Longhorns

Texas football redshirt freshman Sydir Mitchell is expected to stay with the team according to a report from 247Sports. Mitchell announced his intention to enter the portal on Wednesday but never officially entered.

The Longhorns were already bracing for some depth problems on their defensive line, with current Texas defensive tackles Alfred Collins, Vernon Broughton, Jermayne Lole and Bill Norton running out of eligibility. In addition, they lost defensive tackles Tiaoalii Savea, Aaron Bryant and Jaray Bledsoe to the transfer portal.

Mitchell is a former four-star prospect from New Jersey who’s seen action in five games this year. He had .5 tackles for loss and four total in 2024 as a backup. He may not have seen play this season, but Mitchell provides depth and veteran experience to a position group that will look very young next season.

Alex January is one of Texas’ other returning defensive tackles. A three-star recruit from high school football power Duncanville, he drew plenty of praise this season from coaches as a freshman. The Longhorns’ incoming recruiting class includes plenty of talented defensive linemen, including four-star Josiah Sharma, four-star Myron Charles and five-star Justus Terry.

Texas will be searching for reinforcements in the transfer portal as well. According to a report from Inside Texas, Purdue defensive tackle Cole Brevard will visit Austin on Friday after a stop on Thursday at SMU. The 6-foot-3, 333-pound All-Big Ten tackle played this past season at Purdue.
