West Virginia head coach Rich Rodriguez addressed the media Saturday and WVSports.com provides a summary of what was said during his press conference.
–About 100 plays in and everybody was live. Rodriguez felt it was a productive standpoint which you saw the defense win some and offense win some. There were a lot of reps for players.
–Rodriguez didn’t see many missed tackles but there were too many penalties with procedural things. They had one unsportsmanlike penalty but they’re all learning.
–They rallied to the ball on defense. They still aren’t getting enough push up front on offense and aren’t getting off the ball and changing the line of scrimmage.
–Rodriguez wants to watch the film to see where his team is at from a physicality and effort standpoint. From an assignment standpoint, they missed a couple defensively and from an offensive standpoint there weren’t a lot of missed assignments but some easy ones they can correct. The weather has been good so they should not be getting tired.
–Rodriguez didn’t want his coaches yelling out situations or things to do so everybody was on the sidelines but a couple of other coaches so those guys would have to feel like game mode. They didn’t do any live special teams but they will do that one day this week.
–Three man battle at field goal kicker right now. Ethan Head has a strong leg and it’s one of the reasons they got him for kickoffs. Rodriguez prefers to kick the ball out of the end zone if possible.
–There weren’t as many issues with the quarterback’s cadence and getting off the ball but there was five procedural penalties and that has to improve.
–Eddie Kelly is a one year guy that can come in and make an impact. He’s worked hard and is better shape than when he arrived. He has a chance to contribute and you can’t have enough of those guys.
–Quarterbacks ran competitively today. They ran a little sideways at times but were competitive. Ryan Ward had a big catch and all the tight ends appeared to block well. All the slot wide receivers had some big catches. The penalties were a little bit to be unexpected and they put the ball on the ground twice. On defense, they didn’t attack the ball as much as they can punching the ball and trying to get it out but for a first scrimmage there is a lot to teach off of. They might have had 110 plays.
–Cyncir Bowers had some decent runs today as did Jahiem White and Diore Hubbard. Kannon Katzer came back today but there’s still some time in short yardage where they have to stick their foot in the ground and get it. They do have size at quarterback and they are still actively recruiting.
