Rutgers Women’s Basketball Adds Matthew Brune as General Manager

by

In a media scrum after the press conference where new Rutgers women’s basketball coach Gary Redus II was introduced to the university, Rutgers athletic director Keli Zinn announced to a group of reporters that women’s basketball will get its own general manager, and that Rob Sullivan will solely focus on the men’s side of things from then on.

Now it appears that Rutgers women’s basketball has found its new general manager. According to The Knight Report, former On3 LSU sports reporter Matthew Brune has been hired to be the team’s general manager.

According to The Knight Report, Brune has been a recruiting analyst and writer covering the LSU women’s basketball team. He also worked in a similar role with 247Sports.

Redus made it very clear what he is looking for in a general manager at his introductory press conference: “Someone who I had a relationship with, who understands what I’m looking for, and who has a background with analytics, so I don’t have to do all the legwork. I’m coming from a place where I did a lot of the legwork when it came to identifying, evaluating, and all those different things. And I think that if I can use someone on the staff to do those things, now I can do the easy part, which is just communicating with really good players.”

It is worth noting that Brune does not have any known experience working in athletic departments or with the financial side of college athletics. However, it sounds like his role will largely pertain to recruitment analysis, according to the statement made by Redus, which is an area where his experience at On3 and 247sports will come into play.
