The NHL may see more consequential deals during the break for the 4-Nation Face-Off and after a series of trades early this month, several contenders may be checking in with the Buffalo Sabres to see who may be available leading up to the March 7th trade deadline, which is reflected in three Sabres players being on TSN’s Trade Bait Board.
The Sabres are at the bottom of the Eastern Conference standings with a 22-27-5 record in spite of winning four of their last five games. GM Kevyn Adams has indicated that he is open to making deals, but he prefers to make hockey trades rather than sell assets for prospects or future draft picks.
Three players — winger Jordan Greenway, defenseman Bowen Bryam, and center Dylan Cozens — are on the list. Greenway is a pending unrestricted free agent and is nearly ready to return to the Sabres lineup after undergoing surgery to repair a middle-body injury. Byram is an arbitration-eligible restricted free agent, while Cozens has been the subject of widespread trade speculation despite having five years remaining on a seven-year, $49.7 million contract.
Adams recently said he is interested in re-signing veteran forwards Jason Zucker and Greenway, but it would have to make sense to both sides. If the Sabres cannot extend either, they are assumed to be moved for the best return available.
Byram was acquired from Colorado last March for Casey Mittelstadt and has a career-high 29 points in 54 games. The Sabres could be interested in the BC native long-term, but they have time since the 23-year-old is two years away from hitting the open market.
Cozens is in the midst of a second straight underachieving season after scoring a career-high 31 goals in 2023, and last week the Athletic’s Pierre LeBrun indicated that the Calgary Flames are enamored with the Yukon Territory native.
