SEC Women’s Basketball Power Rankings: Lady Vols tumble after two terrible losses

by

The SEC women’s basketball regular season is over.

If the final month of the season is any indication, we’re in for a treat this March. Two of last week’s top-four teams ended the season with two straight losses, although Tennessee fell much more than LSU, which went into overtime on the road and then lost with star guard Flau’jae Johnson sidelined.

The SEC tournament begins Wednesday at Bon Secours Arena in Greenville, South Carolina, and it’s primed to be one for the books.

Rankings based on games as of March 3.

1. South Carolina (27-3, 15-1)

Last week: 2

What to know: Some people seemed upset that the Gamecocks won the coin flip for the No. 1 seed, but the tiebreaker should have been scoring margin between the two matchups anyway.

2. Texas (29-2, 15-1)

Last week: 1

What to know: Texas’ road matchup with Mississippi State was almost more of a nightmare than a triumphant return to Starkville for Vic Schaefer, but the Longhorns escaped by the skin of their teeth.

TEXAS: ‘It is what it is’: Texas Longhorns won’t lament loss of coin toss ahead of SEC tournament

3. Kentucky (22-6, 11-5)

Last week: 5

What to know: Kenny Brooks now has two blowout wins against Kim Caldwell, which is two more than anyone else in the SEC.

4. Oklahoma (23-6, 11-5)

Last week: 7

What to know: The Sooners are peaking at the right time, and I wouldn’t want to run into them in March.

5. LSU (27-4, 12-4)

Last week: 3

What to know: LSU better hope Johnson is back for the NCAA tournament, because it’s looking like an early exit if she’s not healthy.

TIGERS: LSU women’s basketball drops regular season finale to Ole Miss without Flau’jae Johnson

6. Ole Miss (19-9, 10-6)

Last week: 6

What to know: Ole Miss pulled off an upset in Baton Rouge, but it would feel a bit more impressive if Johnson hadn’t been sidelined.

7. Alabama (23-7, 10-6)

Last week: 8

What to know: Alabama finished 10-6 in SEC play for a second straight year, which is about exactly what everyone expected it to do.

CRIMSON TIDE: Alabama women’s basketball SEC Tournament seeding, schedule for Crimson Tide

8. Vanderbilt (21-9, 8-8)

Last week: 10

What to know: Vanderbilt dropped 100 points against Missouri in coach Robin Pingeton’s final home game, which feels like a fitting way to conclude the last two seasons in Columbia.

VANDY: Vanderbilt women’s basketball to be No. 8 seed in SEC tournament; could rematch with Tennessee

9. Tennessee (21-8, 8-8)

Last week: 4

What to know: The Lady Vols crashed and burned last week, and they have some soul-searching to do before the postseason starts.

GEORGIA LOSS: Lady Vols playing worst basketball of season for Kim Caldwell with March Madness starting

10. Mississippi State (20-10, 7-9)

Last week: 10

What to know: The Bulldogs were oh so close to giving Schaefer the welcome back they wanted to, but Texas’ talent won out in the end.

BULLDOGS: How Denim DeShields all-star family helped pave path to Mississippi State women’s basketball

11. Georgia (12-18, 4-12)

Last week: 15

What to know: You know what, you got to hand it to Georgia. No one – not even ESPN analytics that gave it a 1.7% chance to win – thought the Bulldogs would pull off the second-biggest upset in Division I this season.

12. Florida (14-16, 5-11)

Last week: 11

What to know: Florida has flatlined at 5-11 in SEC play for three straight years. Kelly Rae Finley is bringing in some young talent, but it has yet to translate to progress.

13. Auburn (12-17, 3-13)

Last week: 12

What to know: This season will always have a question mark of what could have been if not for a mysterious wrist injury that kept Taliah Scott sidelined for all but three games.

14. Missouri (14-17, 3-13)

Last week: 13

What to know: Pingeton’s time at Missouri will come to merciful end this week. Now, all Missouri has to do is find someone who can resurrect the program. No pressure.

15. Arkansas (10-21, 3-13)

Last week: 12

What to know: Mike Neighbors says he isn’t stepping down after this season, so now the question is – does Arkansas have $1.1 million to burn?

16. Texas A&M (10-18, 3-13)

Last week: 16

What to know: The Aggies were doomed from the moment Aicha Coulibaly got hurt, but even then I didn’t expect two Arkansas losses to follow.
