Second-quarter surge sends Lady Bears past Central

by

Jan. 7—GLADEVILLE — Playing for the first time in almost two weeks, Wilson Central’s girls led until visiting Mt. Juliet went on a second-quarter spurt to flip the script and defeat the Lady Wildcats 68-52

The Lady Wildcats led 15-10 at the first-quarter break and widened to 19-11 in the second. But Mt. Juliet reeled off 12 straight points to swing into a 32-23 lead and never trailed again.

The Lady Bears led 34-27 at halftime and 47-40 going into the fourth as they moved to 7-8 for the season.

“The first quarter we struggled with their little odd front defense,” Mt. Juliet coach Jeremy Hawks said. “We have some offense we like to run against it. But we weren’t doing a very good job of getting into what we were supposed to be doing.

“Second quarter, we got into what we were supposed to be doing and kind of calmed down a little bit and dictated what we were doing. It seemed to work well.”

“We came out in a 1-3-1, something we hadn’t shown,” Lady Wildcats coach Jason Knowles said. “They adjusted to it real well. Jeremy did a great job coaching tonight. He truly outcoached us.”

Mt. Juliet split a pair of holiday games at Goodpasture, defeating Donelson Christian and losing to one-lossNashville Christian.

“We did not play very well, even when we beat DCA,” Hawks said. “We did not look good over Christmas. Christmas basketball is usually pretty ugly and we definitely showed that.”

But at least the Lady Bears did play. Central hadn’t faced an outside opponent since playing in the Kerry Malone Power Games at Lebanon on Dec. 21.

“We actually got a lot of work in,” Knowles said of the holiday break. “We brought the freshman boys’ basketball team in a couple of times over break and played a lot of minutes against them.

“I told the girls we were going to come out rusty. Just shake it off. And we did. And then they went on a run and we just couldn’t respond.”

Makayla Hopson had seven of her 19 points in the second quarter for Mt. Juliet, including the go-ahead putback for a 25-23 lead 3:35 before halftime. Claire Emery scored 16 points and Addy Osborne 13. McClaine Ringenberg hit two 3-pointers as she and Aaliyah Holman each had eight points while Isabella Craig connected on a 3 and Avery Haymans a free throw.

Brooklyn Every led the Lady Wildcats with 14 points before exiting with a fourth-quarter injury. Eliana Ramsey knocked down 9 of 12 free throws on her way to 11 while Brylee Fly sank all six from the line as part of her 10. Kiley Jo Byrom buried three 3-pointers for her nine while Kylie Moss added eight as Central slipped to 6-7. Ramsey racked up nine rebounds

Each team had two players foul out.

Mt. Juliet went to Lebanon last night while Wilson Central hosted White County. The Lady Bears will host Oakland at 6 p.m. Friday while the Lady Wildcats visit Antioch.
