It was a long time coming, but the Mets and Pete Alonso reunited after agreeing to a two-year deal on Wednesday night.
The slugger will be paid $54 million over the course of the contract if he opts in after the first year. But money aside, bringing Alonso back meant a lot to both sides. Alonso gets to return to the team that developed him and the Mets get the bat they needed to protect Juan Soto in the lineup. And although it probably took longer than many thought, the fact that the reunion is a reality means a lot to the team.
“The Mets have improved their position in the National League East,” SNY play-by-play broadcaster Gary Cohen said. “Even without Alonso, they would have gone in as the favorites. Now I think they are absolutely the favorites in the National League East. I never expected there to be a rift in the continuation of Pete Alonso as an all-time Met. Hopefully, he stays for years to come but at least we know he’ll be wearing No. 20 for the Mets in 2025.”
Alonso will come into 2025 looking to continue his march up the franchise leaderboards and cement himself as a Mets legend.
That fact isn’t lost on another Mets legend, Keith Hernandez, and many around baseball and their fans.
Maybe Pete Alonso plays just one more year with the Mets, opts out and leaves. Maybe he plays his entire career with the Mets. Either way, if he stays healthy, sometime this summer he should become the franchise’s all time home run leader. That’s pretty cool. Welcome back, Pete!
