Shai Gilgeous-Alexander had an honest response for opposing fans who criticize the number of free throws he earns, acknowledging that frustration is simply part of competition in the NBA.
Speaking about the criticism surrounding his ability to draw fouls, the Oklahoma City Thunder star explained that fans naturally defend their own teams and players while becoming frustrated with opponents who consistently get to the free-throw line.
“The way I see it, the fans – the people that watch the games and root against us – want their team to win. You will never hear an Oklahoma City Thunder fan complain about my free throws,” Gilgeous-Alexander said.
The MVP candidate also pointed out that every fanbase tends to view these situations differently depending on which side benefits.
“You will never hear a Lakers fan complain about LeBron or Luka’s free throws,” he added.
Rather than taking the criticism personally, Gilgeous-Alexander seemed to embrace the role that comes with being one of the league’s toughest players to defend.
“I get it, guys. I would hate me too.”
