SHS’ strong defense leads to big win in first round of Sequoyah Invite

Dec. 12—A big defensive day led to a huge win for Sequoyah girls basketball on the opening day of the Sequoyah Invite.

A key third quarter led the way to a 63-31 win for the Lady Indians over Ada. The win continues SHS’ perfect 3-0 start to the season.

“I thought we were a little sloppy and we missed some shots we would normally make. It might have been nerves, but we settled in,” SHS head coach Justin Brown said. “Defensively I thought we did really well.”

After a quick 16-9 start in the first quarter, the Lady Indians continued to run up the score. In the first two minutes of the quarter, the Lady Indians picked up six quick points.

Right after the quick start, the Lady Indians feel cold in the second quarter. SHS went nearly four minutes before a three-pointer broke the scoreless stretch.

In spite of the down quarter, the Lady Indians went into halftime up 30-17.

Coming out of the locker room, the Lady Indians came out shooting cold again. Without a point in the first three minutes, the Lady Indians eventually burst into action with a strong stretch. In a matter of a minute, the Lady Indians went from 30 points to 41 points.

The offensive surge was propelled by SHS’ press defense stifling AHS. The Lady Indians scored a team high 22 points in the quarter.

After that strong stretch, the Lady Indians were in motion taking the 63-31 win.

“In the second half we did the same thing, but the shots started falling,” Brown said on the improved offense.

SHS finished the game with two players who scored over 10 points. Tylee Ford and Juliana Davenport picked up 12 and 13 points. Prairie Holmes also added nine points.

SHS is back in action at 7 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 13 against Sapulpa.
