Sophie Cunningham Had Strong Words for WNBA Fan After Incident Resurfaces

The Indiana Fever now own a 21-14 record during the 2025 WNBA season after losing four of their last six games. They got back on track with a 99 to 93 overtime win against the 6-27 Connecticut Sun on Sunday to remain in sixth place in the playoff hunt.

During Sunday’s win, star Fever wing Sophie Cunningham sustained an injury early in the contest, playing just 10 minutes. She has been a pivotal part of Indiana’s offense and defense this year, averaging 8.6 points and 1.0 steals per game.

Cunningham’s sister, Lindsey, took exception to how Sophie got hurt against the Sun. She sent out a message on social media about how the WNBA needs to do a better job of protecting its players.

Indiana Fever Guard Sophie Cunningham’s Incident With Jacy Sheldon

A fan responded to Lindsey’s tweet by attaching a video of Cunningham flagrantly fouling then-Sun guard Jacy Sheldon in a game earlier in the season. By attaching this video, the fan attempted to point out what they thought was hypocrisy in Lindsey’s message.

Sophie then responded with strong words for the WNBA fan. She posted a follow-up message on social media detailing how she was raised and how it has made her the person and player she is.

“… some of us were raised by the words of “don’t bite off more than you can chew” and some of us didn’t. “fafo”😘,” Cunningham wrote.

Sophie Cunningham Taking on Enforcer Role for Caitlin Clark and Fever

Cunningham was added to the Fever’s roster this offseason via trade after spending her entire career with the Phoenix Mercury. Indiana’s focal point of the offense is second-year guard Caitlin Clark, a First-Team All-WNBA player as a rookie last season.

As a result, Cunningham has taken on the role of being an enforcer or a bodyguard for Clark, doing more of the dirty work and making hustle plays so that Clark can keep her hands clean and make big plays.

This included her taking down Sheldon in a June game when she felt like Sheldon had attacked Clark earlier in the game. Based on Cunningham’s recent comment, it seems like she has no remorse for playing hard and mixing things up to protect her teammates.
