South Carolina women’s basketball alums earn both WNBA Conference Player of the Week honors

by

On Tuesday, the WNBA announced that former South Carolina women’s basketball stars A’ja Wilson and Allisha Gray were the league’s Western Conference Player of the Week and Eastern Conference Player of the Week, respectively.

Wilson put up a ridiculous 29.3-point, 13.0-rebound, and 3.7-assist stat line. The three-time MVP also logged the WNBA’s first-ever 30-point, 20-rebound game against the Connecticut Sun. She dished out five assists against Connecticut, too, as the Las Vegas Aces completed a perfect 3-0 week. This is the third time this season that Wilson has won the WNBA Western Conference’s top weekly honor.

Gray moved her season tally for 25-point performances to eight on the season. She averaged 21.0 points, 4.5 rebounds, and 3.5 assists. Gray also shot at least 50% in both of the Atlanta Dream’s contests. It is no coincidence that the Dream won each game with their best player performing so well. Atlanta extended their winning streak to five games. Gray has now won two WNBA Eastern Conference Player of the Week awards this season.

With the WNBA Postseason beginning in less than a month, both the Aces and the Dream are firmly in the projected playoff field. Vegas entered Tuesday as the league’s No. 6 overall seed. Atlanta is tied with the defending champs New York Liberty for the second-best record in the WNBA.

With strong finishes, both Wilson and Gray could push back into the MVP discussion. Inclusion on the All-WNBA team seems firmly within their grasps, too. On the season, Wilson is averaging 22.2 points, 9.6 rebounds, 3.4 assists, 2.1 blocks, and 1.6 steals. Meanwhile, Gray has posted 18.9 points, 5.4 rebounds, 3.8 assists, and 1.1 steals per game.
