South Dakota State women’s basketball overcomes slow start to defeat Oral Roberts

The South Dakota State women’s basketball team defeated Oral Roberts, 89-71, on Saturday to win their 58th consecutive conference game. The Golden Eagles were third in the conference heading into the matchup with an 8-2 record.

The Jackrabbits took the lead in the second quarter after falling behind 9-0. After allowing Oral Roberts to shoot over 40% in the first quarter, South Dakota State held them to just 22% in the second while they mounted their comeback.

That uptick in defensive intensity went hand in hand with their offense. The Jackrabbits shot a scorching 61.5% from the field in the second quarter and outscored the Golden Eagles 24-11 to take a 38-35 lead into halftime.

It was all South Dakota State the rest of the way as the Jackrabbits continued to shoot the lights out in the second half. SDSU shot 65% from the field in the final two quarters and outscored Oral Roberts by 15 points in the second half.

Overall, SDSU held the Golden Eagles to just 38% from the field. The Jackrabbits also outrebounded Oral Roberts by 17.

Paige Meyer led South Dakota State in scoring with 23 points and also recorded six rebounds and seven assists. Brooklyn Meyer tallied 20 points and eight rebounds on 8-of-9 shooting. Haleigh Timmer finished third in scoring with 18 points and also had five rebounds.

The Jackrabbits will travel to Fargo, North Dakota to face North Dakota State on Wednesday, Feb. 12.
