One of the biggest college basketball analysts in the country has the Spartans among his top 20 schools in his way-too-early rankings for next year.
Like many in the college basketball world, Gary Parrish of CBS Sports has released his way-too-early rankings for next season already, and he has the Spartans in the top 20 nationally. Parrish has Michigan State coming in at No. 17 in his latest rankings released earlier this week.

Here’s what Parrish had to say about the Spartans:
“This ranking is based on the Spartans returning four of the top eight scorers – specifically Coen Carr, Jaxon Kohler, Jeremy Fears and Carson Cooper – from a team that finished 30-7 and advanced to the Elite Eight of the 2025 NCAA Tournament. That core will be joined by a recruiting class highlighted by four-star freshmen Cam Ward and Jordan Scott.”
Among Big Ten teams, Michigan State comes in behind a few of their peers in Parrish’s rankings. He has Michigan State behind the following Big Ten teams: Purdue (No. 3), UCLA (No. 6) and Michigan (No. 11). Parrish has the Spartans ahead of the following ranked teams in his list: Oregon (No. 18), Ohio State (No. 22) and Wisconsin (No. 24).
In other way-too-early polls, Michigan State has ranged from top five to unranked. But typically, the Spartans have landed right about where Parrish has them in the mid-to-late teens. So this ranking from Parrish seems about right for where Michigan State currently sits heading into the offseason.
