Bell Canadian Trials, Night 5: Taylor Ruck Finishes 5-for-5 Trials

It’s been a banner week for Taylor Ruck. She finished it off on Thursday night with her fifth win in as many events, going 25.93 in the women’s 50 butterfly to pick up the win.

All the action from the final night of trials in Montreal:

Women’s 200 backstroke

Madison Kryger outlasted Ingrid Wilm in the battle of backstrokers. Kryger went 2:08.17 to win by nearly two seconds over Wilm, who went 2:10.10 in a field without Kylie Masse.

Third was Reina Liu in 2:11.31. The field slowed after that, with Ella Jansen fourth in 2:13.22, .08 up on Florence Robitaille. In between was B final winner Lexi Stephens in 2:12.22.

Men’s 200 backstroke

Ethan Ekk picked up a win in 1:57.58, one of two swimmers to break two minutes. Blake Tierney, the national record holder, was the other, in 1:58.76. Jacques Harrison finished third in 2:00.55. He was .08 up on Francis Brennan and .19 up on Aiden Norman in fifth.

Women’s 50 butterfly

Taylor Ruck has wrapped up a stellar week. She added the 50 fly title to the 50 free, 100 back, 100 fly and 100 free. Ruck went 25.93. She was four tenths up on Matea Gigovic, who went 26.38. there was another half-second back to Leilani Fack in third.

Fourth overall was Helena Tripp in 27.45. The B final was quicker, with Ziyu Zhou in 27.19 and Katherine Kuehn in 27.20.

Men’s 50 butterfly

Sans Josh Liendo, Finlay Knox picked up another win in the 50 fly, the veteran showing his versatility with a time of 23.36. Chris Weeks was second in 23.52. Eric Ginsburg and Filip Senc-Samardzic were third and fourth in 23.88 and 23.89, respectively.

Women’s 100 breaststroke

Alexanne Lepage continues her quest for the Canadian record in the 100 breast with a best time of 1:06.08. That’s .34 seconds up on her best time from the recent Mare Nostrum, and it continues her pursuit of Annamay Pierse’s enduring 2009 record 1:05.74.

Second was Sophie Angus in 1:07.22. Shona Branton finished third in 1:07.63, then a gap of exactly two seconds back to Maelle Sanborn’s 1:09.63, the only other sub-1:10 time.

Men’s 100 breaststroke

Oliver Dawson completed the breaststroke sweep with a time of 59.97, the only sub-minute performance. It’s shy of his national record 59.33 from May but still was well clear of the field.

Second was Apollo Hess in 1:01.40. Brayden Taivassalo followed in 1:01.58. Justice Migneault was fourth in 1:02.03.

Women’s 800 freestyle

Ella Crosgrove finished up the meet with a time of 8:40.35 to earn the win. She was 1.04 seconds ahead of Emma Finlin’s 8:41.38. Julie Brousseau finished third in 8:46.32.

Paraswimming event

Jaime Gosgriffe won the women’s 200 individual medley in 2:33.49, giving the SM10 swimmer the win. Tess Routliffe was second in 3:01.92 as an SM7.

Nicholas Bennett picked up another victory in 2:07.29, the SM14 swimmer more than a second off his Canadian record. Fernando Lu was second in 2:15.57.
