Tessa Johnson injury update: South Carolina women’s basketball guard to miss home opener vs Coppin State

by

COLUMBIA — Sophomore guard Tessa Johnson is out for South Carolina women’s basketball‘s home opener on Thursday night.

Johnson missed time in the NC State game on Sunday but it was not clear why. After the game coach Dawn Staley said she tweaked her ankle a little bit but on Wednesday afternoon Staley said Johnson practiced and that everyone was good to go for the game against Coppin State.

It’s unclear if she hurt her ankle more in the time between Wednesday evening and pre-game on Thursday but the team posted an image of Johnson less than an hour before tipoff and said “just an extra day of rest.”

The Gamecocks (2-0) play another home game on Sunday against East Carolina (2 p.m., SEC Network).

Johnson scored 15 points in the season opener against Michigan on Nov. 4, picking up where she left off in the title game on April 7, when she had a team high 19 points.

She averaged 17 minutes and six points per game off the bench last season.
