Behind Paige Allen and Mireia Aguado, the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi women’s basketball team stunned Texas A&M in College Station in their season opener Monday, 62-56.

The grad students each scored 14 points and helped the Islanders build as much as a 10-point lead, only to see the Aggies move ahead in the third quarter.

Royce Chadwick’s team answered the opening bucket of the fourth quarter with an 8-0 spurt behind buckets from Allen, Aguado and Samora Watson.

Watson scored four of her six points in the final frame and A&M-Corpus Christi never trailed after the run. Annukka Willstedt nailed a go-ahead 3-pointer with 5:39 remaining that began an 11-5 surge to close the game and clinch the program’s first win against Texas A&M.

The victory was also the first over a power conference school since the Islanders upended Alabama in 2009-10.
