No. 5 Texas A&M still has a lot to prove after defeating Auburn 16-10 in Week 5, but now knowing that the Aggies’ defense, which allowed just 177 yards and one yard in the fourth quarter on Saturday, can step up and play at an elite level when needed. In four games, Texas A&M has proven its ability to win in multiple ways after defeating Notre Dame on the road 41-40 in Week 3.
While scoring just 16 points isn’t enough to win most weeks, the primary reason the Aggies struggled to finish drives was the 13 penalties that killed any momentum, coupled with two missed field goals that would have put the game out of reach early in the fourth quarter. Still, a win is a win, especially in the SEC, and ahead of Saturday night’s blackout game vs. Mississippi State, Texas A&M is looking to continue its undefeated streak.

After the win, USA TODAY Sports’ weekly College Football Re-Rank, one of the more accurate national ranking systems, saw the Aggies rise one spot to No. 5, matching their ranking in the US LBM Coaches Poll. In the SEC, only Ole Miss (No. 4) is ranked higher, while Georgia dropped from the No. 1 spot to No. 7 after losing to Alabama at home.
LSU also dropped eight spots to No. 16 after losing to Ole Miss on the road, as the Tigers continue to struggle on offense, which could end up benefiting the Aggies when they make their way to Baton Rouge four weeks from now.
Currently, Texas A&M’s next five opponents include Mississippi State (No. 47), Florida (No. 64), Arkansas (No. 79) on the road, LSU (No. 16) on the road, and Missouri (No. 15) on the road.
