SEC Championships, Night 6: Texas Caps Conference Debut with Title Sweep; Spectacular Tie in 100 Freestyle

Texas has turned its first SEC Championships on the women’s side into a rout. Jillian Cox added a little flourish to that to start the final night.

Cox won the mile in 15:30.33, setting a meet record that had held since 2016. It’s part of a romp for Texas to the crown, though the women’s race did produce a pulsating battle for second place, Florida edging Tennessee by just seven points. Texas’s men ended Florida’s run of 12 consecutive titles.

Camille Spink of Tennessee and Texas’ Emma Sticklen split the Commissioner’s Cup, given to the high point scorer in the meet, with each collecting 96 points. Rex Maurer’s 91 points won it for Texas on the men’s side.

Sticklen was named the Women’s Swimmer of the Meet, while Florida’s Julian Smith took home the men’s award. Florida’s Camyla Monroy and LSU’s Carson Paul were designated as the Divers of the Meet.

The final night’s action, which ended with Tennessee setting an NCAA record in the 400 freestyle relay:

Women’s 1650 freestyle

Jillian Cox started the night with a bang, downing one of the older meet records. Her time of 15:30.33 battered the field by more than 15 seconds. It also took down the SEC Championships record set Brittany MacLean of Georgia in 2016 (15:36.52). MacLean’s 15:27 from NCAAs in 2014 remains the conference mark.

To get the win, Cox had to beat the reigning NCAA and SEC champion, Abby McCulloh. The Georgia sophomore went 15:45.77 and saw her pool record from last year’s NCAAs (15:37.74) fall into Cox’s hands.

Kate Hurst was third for Texas. Emma Weyant, last year’s runner-up, followed in fourth ahead of Florida mate Michaela Mattes.

Men’s 1650 freestyle

Texas distance doing what Texas distance does. David Johnston won the race in 14:26.00, clear of the field by 6.5 seconds. Levi Sandidge, the 2023 champion from Kentucky, was third in 14:30.61. Rex Mauer of Texas was third with Kentucky’s Carson Hick fourth. Sandidge was third last year, Hick fifth. Mason Mathias was down a spot from last year in fifth for Auburn.

The massive shortfall in the mile, though, was Florida. A year ago, the Gators went 1-2-6-7 in the mile. This year, it was nowhere close. Jake Mitchell, sixth last year, finished ninth for the Gators this time around, their best finisher, a spot up on Josh Parent. Last year’s runner-up, Gio Linscheer, plummeted to 14th. Oskar Lindholm dropped from seventh to 18th. And the reigning SEC champion Andrew Taylor was a nonfactor in 22nd. Linscheer had been second at NCAAs in 2024, Taylor third.

Women’s 200 backstroke

Bella Sims wrapped up the backstroke double by defending her title in the 200 back, her time of 1:48.26 just brushing up against Rhyan White’s 2020 meet and conference record of 1:48.06. White was nearly two seconds clear of the field.

Second was Josephine Fuller of Tennessee, her 14th career SEC silver medal. That includes three straight years in this event. She went 1:50.14, within a half-second of her school record. Sophie Brinson was third for the Vols, with Regan Rathwell eighth.

Sims, Catie Choate (fourth) and Jo Jo Ramey (sixth) score a big win for Florida, extending their edge for second place in the team race from 30 points to 66 points. Mabel Zavaros and Zoe Dixon taking the top two places in the B final were instrumental, too.

Johnny Marshall is 4-for-4 in SEC backstroke races in his young career, setting a meet record of 1:35.85 to successfully defend his crown. It’s nearly a second faster than the 1:36.68 he did last year, and it creeps within a tenth of Shaine Casas’s conference record from NCAAs in 2021.

Marshall had to hold off NCAA runner-up Hubert Kos, now with Texas. Kos went 1:36.10. Marshall was fourth at that NCAAs last year.

Texas’ Will Modglin was third in 1:38.76. Ruard van Renan of Georgia took home fourth in 1:39.92.

Women’s 100 freestyle

Make it three golds for Camille Spink, who repeats as SEC champion. The Tennessee swimmer went 46.25 to beat teammate Brooklyn Douthwright by more than a second and add to her 50 free and 200 free titles.

Third was Erin Gemmell of Texas. Alabama was fourth and fifth via Jada Scott and Cadence Vincent.

The 1-2 allows Tennessee to jump Florida by 11 points – so a 77-point reversal – for second in the team race.

Men’s 100 freestyle

Josh Liendo and Jordan Crooks will forever be tied together, part of an era of resurgence for SEC sprinting and swimming excellence in the Americas more broadly.

It’s only fitting that one of their final races be literally too close to call.

Liendo and Crooks tied for gold in the men’s 100 free, both clocking in at 40.45 seconds. That downs the meet record that Crooks set in the morning.

It is the 11th career gold medal and 18th in three years for Liendo. It’s the 10th gold and 26th total in Crooks’ four years. And it ties them ever tighter in history, the Canadian Olympic medalist and the Caymanian short-course world champion.

Third was Gui Caribe of Tennessee in 40.85, which was just .03 slower than the time Liendo used to win it last year. Texas’ Chris Guiliano was fourth in 41.15, followed a tenth later by Jere Hribar.

Women’s 200 breaststroke

Make it seven breaststroke titles for Mona McSharry, adding a 3-peat in the 200 breast to her 100 breast 4-peat. McSharry went 2:05.85, going out quick and holding off a charge from Avery Wiseman of Alabama. Wiseman got within a half-second but not closer, the senior who was fifth last year getting silver this time in 2:06.28. Tennessee’s McKenzie Siroky was third in 2:06.57, though a B final glut allows Florida to retake second place in the team standings (the Gators went 8-9-11-12-13).

Texas was fourth and fifth, with Abigail Arens and Piper Enge.

Men’s 200 breaststroke

The 2023 champion Aleksas Savickas is back on top, the Florida junior taking down his meet record by .06 to 1:50.02. He was second last year to Alex Sanchez of Texas A&M, but he survived a duel with Texas’ Nate Germonprez to reclaim the title. The Texas sophomore went 1:50.55, also under the pool record.

Savickas’ time is also the conference record in addition to the meet mark.

Sanchez was fourth this time around. Will Scholtz of Texas finished third in 1:51.04.

Men’s platform diving

Texas A&M’s accomplished diving program is in good hands with Jaxon Bowshire, the freshman setting the pool record by scoring 476.25 points. That downs the 2020 total of Miami’s David Dinsmore (466.75). Both he and Carson Paul topped that, the LSU junior tallying 468.15. Paul was third last year and sixth at NCAAs.

Jesus Gonzalez of Florida finished third with 452.35. Missouri’s Collier Dyer and Tommaso Zannella were fourth and fifth, the latter in a tie with Jacob Welsh. The Aggies’ Rhett Hensley was ninth.

Women’s 400 freestyle relay

Camille Spink did a lot of the work, but a stellar anchor leg by Josephine Fuller rallied Tennessee over Texas into a win. With Brooklyn Douthwright and Julia Mrozinski, the Volunteers went 3:09.02, .24 up on Texas. Spink split 46.01. Fuller inherited a deficit of .23 seconds but went 47.04 to outsplit Texas’s anchor.

Florida led after 100 yards thanks to Bella Sims going 47.06, but the Gators couldn’t defend their title from last year. They finished third in 3:11.07. It was enough, though, to hold a seven-point edge on Tennessee for second place in the team standings.

The top three, plus Alabama, LSU, Georgia and Auburn all booked A Cuts.

Men’s 400 freestyle relay

Tennessee began the meet by nearly setting the NCAA record in the 200 medley relay. The did it in the 200 free relay.

They put a bow on it Saturday.

Gui Caribe, Nikoli Blackman, Lamar Taylor and Jordan Crooks clobbered the NCAA record set last year by Arizona State by .99 seconds, going 2:42.41 to win. Florida was second in 2:43.60, under the old conference mark that it had set in 2023. Texas was third.
