Texas’ future series with Arizona State looks to be a causality of the SEC’s move to a nine game schedule. According to reports, the Texas Longhorns athletic department has asked to be let out of its scheduled football home-and-home with ASU in 2032 and 2033.
In fact, UT’s tradition of scheduling at least one quality non-conference opponent is in jeopardy. There was a lot of speculation that the Longhorns missed the college football playoff because they played a challenging schedule and lost to defending national champion Ohio State in the first game of the season.

There is now a perception based on the CFP committee’s choices that teams should schedule an easy non-conference schedule. Coupled with a new nine-game SEC schedule, and you can see why UT is shedding opponents. Texas also has a future series with Notre Dame in 2028 and 2029. That is also in jeopardy.
But it is a shame. Texas has always prided itself on the opponents it plays in non-conference. Texas will finish it’s series with Ohio State in 2026 and with Michigan in 2027. Both are home games.
