Over the weekend, the Texas Longhorns Women’s basketball team scored a historic win over South Carolina. UT ended South Carolina’s 57-game SEC winning streak, beating the Gamecocks 66-62 in front of a sellout crowd of 10,517 fans at Moody Center. Before Sunday, the reigning national champions hadn’t lost to a conference opponent in the regular season since December 2021.
The result? The Lady Longhorns have jumped South Carolina and moved into No. 3 in the latest AP Poll. Texas sits behind No. 1 UCLA and No. 2 Notre Dame in the latest ranking. Texas avenged a 67-50 Jan. 12 loss to the Gamecocks, who fall to No. 4 in the new poll. LSU rounds out the Top 5.
Texas’ only other loss on the season was to the second-ranked Fighting Irish. The Longhorns and Gamecocks are two of four SEC teams with just one loss in conference play, a group that also includes No. 4 LSU and No. 11 Kentucky. South Carolina has no more games remaining against LSU, but will wrap up its regular season on March 2 against Kentucky. Texas, meanwhile, plays both the Wildcats and Tigers this week, traveling to Kentucky on Thursday before hosting LSU next Sunday.
