Texas men’s basketball roster depth tested after Arthur Kaluma injury vs Alabama

Injury blows keep coming for Texas men’s basketball, as they lost one of its key contributors during Tuesday’s defeat to No. 2-ranked Alabama.

Longhorns forward Arthur Kaluma tried to battle through knee soreness but left 11 minutes into the game against the Crimson Tide. He joins an injury list that includes forward Devon Pryor and guard Chendall Weaver.

Kaluma’s absence is not a cause for alarm yet, as he missed Texas’ 70-69 win against Texas A&M with a knee injury before returning for the team’s next four games. Forward Jayson Kent picked up the slack in his absence, scoring 19 points on six of nine shooting for his best game of the season.

Texas Longhorns forward Arthur Kaluma (6) controls the ball asAlabama Crimson Tide center Clifford Omoruyi (11) and forward Grant Nelson (4) defend in the first half as the Texas Longhorns take on the Crimson Tide at the Moody Center, Feb. 11, 2025.

Texas coach Rodney Terry said after the Texas A&M game that Kaluma was day-to-day and would only return once fully healthy. If the forward is dealing with a similar issue, there’s a chance he’ll be available for Saturday’s game versus Kentucky.

However, Texas will have limited front-court options if Kaluma and Pryor are out Saturday. Freshman forward Nic Codie saw six minutes of play against Alabama despite the injuries. Kent can expect a heavy load of minutes and Terry may have Kadin Shedrick and Zedrick Onyema on the court simultaneously for some extra size.
