Texas students, fans start petition to SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey over Bevo ban

University of Texas mascot Bevo parades down Bevo Boulevard ahead of the Texas Longhorns’ game against the Kentucky Wildcats at Darrell K Royal Texas Memorial Stadium in Austin, Nov. 23, 2024.

The decision to prohibit Bevo, the University of Texas’s live longhorn steer mascot, from attending the SEC Championship Game due to sideline space constraints has sparked significant reactions among students and fans. In contrast, Uga XI, the University of Georgia’s bulldog mascot, will be present at the game.

This disparity has led to widespread discussions on social media platforms, with many expressing their dissatisfaction and advocating for Bevo’s inclusion. A Change.org petition demanding Bevo’s attendance garnered over 3,000 signatures within the first five hours of its launch. The petition itself is directed to Southeastern Conference commissioner Greg Sankey.

“We believe this to be an unbalanced decision by the SEC, favoring Georgia by permitting their mascot while barring ours. Bevo is a symbol of our school spirit and unity, a rallying point for our team that cannot be sidelined or silenced. We wish to underscore the fact that this imbalance tarnishes the sporting spirit of the SEC Championship.”

In the event that the Longhorns advance from the SEC Championship and College Football Playoff victorious, the National Championship game will also be held at Mercedes-Benz Stadium. Bevo, will be barred from that event, too. The Texas Longhorns will take on the Georgia Bulldogs in the SEC Championship on Saturday from Atlanta, the game will be broadcasted on ABC for those who will be unable to attend, like Bevo.
